Sports around Arromanches and the Bessin: run, cycle, fly, sail, ride.

Everything to keep moving on the D-Day coast: the seawall and cliffs for running, sand yachting on Gold Beach, paragliding above the Mulberry, the 36-hole Omaha Beach Golf Club, the Vélomaritime, the Scenic Route 1944, the cross triathlon, the Bayeux Urban Trail and the spring races.

Arromanches beach and seawall

For a village of barely a thousand inhabitants, Arromanches concentrates a rare variety of sport: within 15 minutes by car you can sail on Gold Beach, take off in a paraglider above the Mulberry harbour, or play 18 holes facing the Channel. And that's before mentioning cycling. Here is our complete guide, by discipline, to sporting activities for your stay at Villa Bellevue.

Running: the seawall, the cliffs, and the Bessin races

1. Arromanches seawall — the daily warm-up loop

The Arromanches seawall stretches nearly 800 metres opposite the Mulberry caissons. Smooth surface, continuous sea view, zero elevation: perfect for a morning run or evening intervals. Combined with the pedestrian street and the trail up to the cliffs, you can easily build a 5 to 10 km loop straight from the villa door, no driving required.

2. Cliff jogging — Pointe du Hoc and Saint-Côme heights

For runners who like rougher terrain, the cliffs of Longues-sur-Mer (4 km west) and Saint-Côme-de-Fresné (overlooking Arromanches to the north-east) deliver a spectacular trail along the GR223 — Coastguards' Path. 180° views over the Channel, short grass, German battery midway.

⚠ Essential safety

Unstable cliffs — respect signs and keep your distance

The limestone cliffs of the Bessin are actively eroding. Partial collapses occur every year, particularly after heavy rain and winter storms. Do not approach the edge, strictly respect the warning signs (usually installed 5-10 metres from the break), don't cut across marked-off areas, and be extra careful in fog or low light. Never run with earphones on these stretches: you won't hear the wind picking up or rockfalls starting. For group trails or children, prefer the seawall or inland paths.

3. The annual Bessin running events

Three unmissable runner's events — details and registration on the official sites:

4. Scenic Route 1944 — Arromanches to Grandcamp-Maisy in 48 km

The flagship D-Day cycle route. 48 km signed from Arromanches, hugging the Landing coast: Longues-sur-Mer (German battery), Port-en-Bessin, Vierville-sur-Mer, Colleville (American Cemetery), Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, ending at Grandcamp-Maisy. Doable in one day on an e-bike, two days on a touring bike with a night in Grandcamp. Details and GPX on Cirkwi.

5. La Vélomaritime (EuroVelo 4) — 1,500 km from Roscoff to Dunkirk

The Vélomaritime (part of EuroVelo 4) passes through Arromanches. The Arromanches → Ouistreham section (about 30 km) follows the Juno Beach and Sword Beach coast with views of the artificial harbour, oyster parks and passages through Courseulles-sur-Mer (Juno Beach Centre). To the west, the Arromanches → Longues-sur-Mer section uses a paved greenway, ideal with kids. Official site: lavelomaritime.com and France Vélo Tourisme.

6. Renting an e-bike in Arromanches

If you didn't travel with your bikes, E-Station Arromanches rents adult e-bikes, mountain bikes, touring bikes, kids' bikes and child seats. Helmets, locks and repair kits included. Essential if you're planning the Scenic Route 1944 (the climbs are real).

Sailing: sand yachting, kayak, paddleboard on Gold Beach

7. Sand yachting at Asnelles — the regional reference

The Asnelles beach (Gold Beach), 3 km from Arromanches, is one of Europe's finest beaches for sand yachting: firm sand, steady wind, vast open space. The Asnelles Gold Beach Nautical Leisure Centre (CLNA) is the regional reference, an accredited French Sailing School with a strong sporting track record. The site was fully renovated in 2023-2024.

Adult discovery sessions, kids' courses, family taster sessions — accessible from age 8. Phone: +33 2 31 22 71 33. Address: Rue du Débarquement, Cale de l'Essex, 14960 Asnelles.

8. Kayak, paddleboard (SUP) and dinghy

The CLNA also offers kayak, stand-up paddle and dinghy sailing taster sessions. For an unsupervised kayak or paddle outing, Asnelles bay is sheltered by the Mulberry Phoenix caissons — calm waters, ideal for beginners. Always check sea conditions with the centre.

9. Swimming and sea swimming — SNSM in season

From early July to late August, Arromanches beach is supervised by SNSM lifeguards. Marked swimming zone. Off-season, swimming is tolerated but unsupervised — extra caution especially during fast rising tides (up to 8 metres tidal range in spring tides).

Flying: paragliding above the D-Day beaches

10. Paragliding tandem from the Tracy-sur-Mer site

The Tracy-sur-Mer launch site, on the heights overlooking Arromanches to the north-east, offers a unique view: you fly literally above the Mulberry caissons. The school Elementair Normandie (based in Port-en-Bessin, 15 min from Arromanches) offers tandem flights and training (initiation / autonomy / advanced). 100% coastal flights. Technical site info on parapentemania.fr.

Tip

Paragliding tandem as a group gift

Groups of 4 to 6 people renting the villa can book a paragliding morning. With weather safety in mind, plan a fallback slot the next day in case conditions don't allow the booked flight.

Golf: 36 holes facing the Channel, 15 minutes from Arromanches

11. Omaha Beach Golf Club — Le Manoir and La Mer

On the heights of Port-en-Bessin-Huppain, just 15 minutes from Arromanches, Omaha Beach Golf Club is the only 36-hole golf course in Normandy and one of the finest courses in north-western France. 4-star rated, opened in 1981, it sits on a limestone plateau characteristic of the Bessin, overlooking the fishing port, the Channel, and — less than 5 km as the crow flies — the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer and Omaha Beach. One of the very few places where you can play 18 holes in the morning and walk silently on the D-Day beaches in the afternoon.

La Mer course — Par 72, 6,166 metres

The signature course. Par 72, official length 6,166 metres from the back tees (5,992 m men, 5,078 m women). Several holes are positioned facing the Channel — holes 10 and 14 are among the most photographed in Normandy. Variable wind makes it technical, especially for golfers used to sheltered courses.

Le Manoir course — Par 71, 5,863 metres

The more parkland course, undulating, with woods and ponds. Typical Bessin bocage charm. Shorter than La Mer (5,863 m), it suits a wider audience: excellent for intermediate golfers, family outings, or late-afternoon rounds. Less wind-exposed.

Practical info

Stay idea

Golf in the morning, D-Day beaches in the afternoon

The unique advantage of Omaha Beach Golf Club: its immediate proximity to the historic sites. Morning round (La Mer or Le Manoir), lunch at the clubhouse, then visit the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville (10 min from the golf) and walk on Omaha Beach before returning to the villa for an apéritif on the terrace. Perfect formula for 4 to 6 golfers on a 3-4 day stay.

For keen golfers — read the detailed La Mer course review by Rob Smith in Golf Monthly (July 16, 2016): hole-by-hole analysis, highlights, suggestions. A must-read before booking: Omaha Beach Course Review — Golf Monthly.

On horseback: beach rides outside peak season

12. Beach horse riding on the D-Day beaches

Galloping along Asnelles beach or Ver-sur-Mer at low tide, in the October or March light: one of the most iconic Normandy images. The Normandy Regional Equestrian Tourism Committee details the conditions for accessing the beaches with your horse.

⚠ Seasonal regulation

Regulated beaches from June 15 to September 15

In Arromanches and Asnelles, horse circulation is regulated during peak season. In Arromanches, horse access to the beach is prohibited from June 15 to September 15. In Asnelles, access is permitted only outside the 9am to 8pm window during the same period. The best months for a beach ride are March-May and October-December: wet sand, golden light, quiet beaches, no restrictions.

13. Equestrian centres and contacts nearby

Several stables organise itinerant rides or half-day outings along the Bessin coast. Some official starting points to contact directly:

For groups staying at the villa, half-day mixed sessions (experienced riders and supervised beginners) are usually bookable. Contact stables directly — allow 2-3 weeks notice for groups.

Hiking: the GR223 and Bessin trails

14. GR223 — Coastguards' Path, Bessin section

The GR223 "Tour du Cotentin" long-distance trail runs through Arromanches along the Calvados and Manche coast. Sections directly accessible from the villa: Arromanches → Asnelles (5 km, flat), Arromanches → Longues-sur-Mer → Port-en-Bessin (12 km, cliffs, moderate elevation), Arromanches → Courseulles via Ver-sur-Mer (15 km, mixed beach and trails). Official FFRP topo guides and IGN maps available at the tourist office.

15. Themed D-Day hikes

Several marked circuits let you discover the Landing sites on foot: Liberation Trail (8 km), Longues Battery Trail, Mulberry Trail. Programme available from Bayeux Bessin Tourism Office.

Quieter sports

16. Sunset Yoga on the seawall (summer)

Since summer 2026, open-air Vinyasa Yoga sessions at sunset have been organised on the Arromanches seawall every Thursday in season. Flowing practice, open to all levels. Mats provided. Details on arromanches.com/evenements.

17. Pétanque on Place du 6 juin

Normandy tradition: on summer evenings, spontaneous games start up on Place du 6 juin. Boules can be rented at the tobacconist in season. Excellent pretext for a sunset apéritif after dinner at the villa.

18. Tennis and adapted physical activity

Municipal tennis courts in Bayeux. For adapted physical activity on medical prescription, Bessin Sport Santé offers personalised programmes and individual sessions (contact via Arromanches town hall).

Reflexology after sport — wellness recovery

To recover after a day of cycling, a clifftop trail or a round of golf, our partner Marie-Adélina Enyedi Taravel, reflexologist in Arromanches (MA Synergie), offers targeted foot-hand-face sessions. Ideal to release tired legs after races or to unwind after a day on the water.
