Heritage

Visiting Bayeux from Arromanches: tapestry, cathedral, itinerary.

A thousand years of history in ten minutes by car. Our ideal day in Bayeux, missing nothing.

Spacious dining area of Villa Bellevue

Bayeux is a 10-minute drive from Arromanches (12 km via the D516), 11 km from the train station. It's the first liberated town of metropolitan France in June 1944, and one of the rare ones to have been not bombed — its medieval centre is intact. A full day is not too much to enjoy it.

The absolute must: the Bayeux Tapestry

Seventy metres of embroidery made around 1070, telling the conquest of England by William the Conqueror in 1066. It's one of the treasures of world heritage (UNESCO since 2007). The audio guide is included in the ticket and you follow the 58 scenes one after the other.

Plan 1h15 to 1h30 for the visit. Ideal at the start of the day to avoid crowds. Book online, especially in July – August.

Important

The Tapestry leaves for the British Museum

The current museum closes to the public from September 1, 2026, and the Tapestry will be exhibited in London until the new museum reopens, planned for 2027. If you want to see it in Bayeux, do it before this summer.

Notre-Dame de Bayeux Cathedral

5 minutes' walk from the museum. Masterpiece of Norman Romanesque (the crypt and choir) and Gothic (the nave) architecture. Both towers reach 76 metres. Free entry. Plan 30 to 45 minutes.

The ideal is to enter in morning light, when the chancel stained glass is at its most beautiful.

The medieval centre

The Aure river crosses Bayeux and its banks have been arranged for a 4 km walk along its course. Very pretty, especially around rue Saint-Jean and the tanners' quarter (former mills). Half an hour of walking is enough to soak it in.

The Saturday morning market

Place Saint-Patrice, 7am to 1pm. One of the most beautiful markets in Calvados. Local producers, AOP cheeses (Pont-l'Évêque, Camembert, Livarot), ciders, calvados, but also clothes, antiques and flowers. If you are in Bayeux on a Saturday morning, it's non-negotiable.

The Bayeux Memorial

10 minutes' walk from the centre. Museum dedicated to the Battle of Normandy (June – August 1944), often more emotional than those of the beaches. The adjoining British cemetery holds 4,144 Commonwealth graves — the largest Commonwealth cemetery in France.

One day is enough for the must-sees (Tapestry, cathedral, centre, meal). A day and a half allows adding the Memorial and cemetery while taking your time.

Going by train?

Bayeux station is 11 km from Arromanches, but there is no regular direct bus. The car remains the most practical. If you arrive by train from Paris (Gare Saint-Lazare, 2h15), plan an Uber or taxi on arrival to Arromanches (≈ €25).
