D-Day & History

The D-Day beaches on foot, by car or by bike.

Three concrete itineraries — one day, three days, one week — to visit the five D-Day beaches from Arromanches.

Arromanches beach and Mulberry B artificial harbour remains

On June 6, 1944, at dawn, 156,000 Allied soldiers landed on five Normandy beaches: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, Sword. The largest amphibious landing in history. Today, these five beaches stretch over nearly 80 km of coastline. From Arromanches, which sits on Gold Beach, you are at the exact centre of the operation.

This guide offers three itineraries depending on your time: the essentials in one day, comfort in three days, or the complete experience in one week.

The essentials: one day by bike or car

If you only have one day, here is the loop covering the major sites around Arromanches.

Morning (3h)

Lunch

In Port-en-Bessin (10 minutes), fish restaurant on the port. Or return to the villa to prepare a picnic with market produce.

Afternoon (4h)

For sunset, head up to Arromanches 360 — the panorama is unforgettable.

Three days: the balanced version

With three days, you alternate historical sites and breathing space.

Day 1 — Arromanches and the British zone (Gold + Juno)

Day 2 — The American zone (Omaha + Pointe du Hoc)

Day 3 — Bayeux and memorial

One week: the complete experience

By bike: the Coastal Green Way

For travellers who want to experience the coast at a slower pace: the V44 (Vélomaritime) follows the coastline. From Arromanches, you can reach Asnelles, Ver-sur-Mer, Courseulles by bike in a few hours. The Scenic Route 1944 is a signed variant specifically for D-Day sites, 51 km total.

Where to rent a bike?

In Arromanches, several providers offer classic and electric bike rentals (recommended given the hills). We'll point you to the right addresses on arrival.

Practical tips

Good to know

Prefer May to September

Outdoor sites (Pointe du Hoc, Omaha, cemeteries) are more moving in good weather. In winter, the wind does its work, but museums stay open.

Booking

Book museums online

D-Day Museum, Caen Memorial, Juno Beach Centre, 360 Cinema: all ticketing offers timed slots. Indispensable in June (D-Day Festival).

82nd anniversary

June 6, 2026

For the 82nd anniversary commemorations, expect heavy crowds on the Arromanches – Omaha zone. See our events agenda for detailed programme.

And civilian memory?

Often overlooked by guides: the Battle of Normandy caused nearly 20,000 civilian deaths, mainly in the cities of Caen and Saint-Lô. The Caen Memorial dedicates entire rooms to the bombed destinations. An indispensable complement to the beach visits, to not forget what the liberation cost the local population.

Live D-Day in total immersion
