Arromanches is one of the easiest Calvados resorts to explore with family: everything is on foot, the beach is huge at low tide, and the cultural offering alternates between fascinating and educational. Here are our suggestions, classified by age.
With toddlers (0 – 4 years)
Attention focuses on the beach and safe walks:
- Central beach at low tide: flat sand, shallow water. SNSM supervision in July-August.
- Arromanches seawall: pushchair-friendly, view of Mulberry B remains (children love these "big rusty boats" in the sea).
- Museum park: lawn for picnics, sea view.
With children 5 – 8 years
The age of immersive discoveries:
- Arromanches 360 circular cinema (500 m). 19 minutes, spectacular format, accessible. Ideal for a first approach to D-Day.
- D-Day Museum: the new 2023 version is highly educational, with animated models and immersive video. Plan 1h.
- Auréo Aquatic Centre in Bayeux (10 minutes): sports pool, leisure pool, splash pad. For a rainy morning.
- Kite flying on the beach at low tide — to buy in the village.
With children 8 – 12 years
The age when history becomes truly fascinating:
- Land sailing in Asnelles (Gold Beach) — 3 km from Arromanches. From age 8, supervised by qualified instructors. Sensations guaranteed, and a living history lesson: rolling on the beach where the 50th British Division landed.
- Juno Beach Centre in Courseulles (13 km): well-designed Canadian museum for children, with interactive trail.
- Memorial Pegasus in Ranville (20 min): the incredible story of Pegasus Bridge taken by glider in the night of June 5-6. Small aviation museums, reconstructed glider.
- Fossil hunting on Sainte-Honorine-des-Pertes beach: flints, fossilised sea urchins in the cliffs.
With teenagers (13+)
History with depth, and more autonomy:
- Colleville American Cemetery and Pointe du Hoc: 20 minutes away. To see with a guide or after preparing the visit. Strong emotion.
- Caen Memorial (35 minutes): plan a full day. Immense and accessible museum.
- GR 223 customs path: hike Arromanches – Longues-sur-Mer – Port-en-Bessin (15 km, to calibrate). Cliffs and German battery on the way.
- Surfing in Asnelles or Saint-Aubin: possible in summer, in good swell.
At the villa: what children love

Practical side
Bring boots and waterproofs
Normandy is still Normandy. Even in July, plan warm clothes and a raincoat. No matter for the beach: at low tide, it's huge even in mixed weather.
Limit distances with little ones
Avoid long car days. Prefer Arromanches – Bayeux – Asnelles – Courseulles for young children. Save Caen, Pointe du Hoc, Sainte-Mère for older ones.
